A Fourth Grade Assignment....
A fourth grade assignment set me on the writing path. You’ll remember that the Peanuts comic, as popular in the 60s as it is now, often featured “Happiness Is.” Our assignment tasked us with writing a poem with that title. I don’t remember anything about the poem except for the last line. “…and at schoolwork, doing your best.” The principal loved it for obvious reasons, and called me to the office to make a poster with my poem. He put it in the foyer display window. I’ll never forget the feeling it gave me to have something I’d written have an impact on someone. So…here we are:)
That was a long time ago. My life took me more in the realm of music, but writing was always in the back of my mind. I wrote my thoughts and feelings in a journal, but as our children were growing up, and we made the decision to homeschool, I was able to use my writing to create songs and stories to enhance our lessons. Now my passion is to write stories that feature people navigating life’s problems with faith solutions. Looking at life with love colored glasses, if you will, the love of Christ.
I graduated from East Texas Baptist College with a degree in All Level Music Education. I worked on a Masters in Vocal Performance at North Texas but left there and pursued some musical interests in New England. I met my husband Randy, a music minister, back in my hometown. We married, had six children, and then he was called to minister in West Texas. I worked for fifteen years in our local public library. Part of my job was to teach music lessons on behalf of an Arts Endowment the library received. I’ve taught piano for over 40 years. Fast forwarding through all the details, I’m retired now, Randy can’t sit still so he works at our local airport. We serve in our church, do community theater, and I still teach piano at the library as a volunteer, and teach choir at our city’s Christian Academy. Our very active local writers group, Critique Cafe, is sponsored by that same arts endowment. I love that I have more time to write now. God has always been good to me, seen me through so many things (that I’ve strategically left out of this epistle, lol) and I’m forever grateful. Did I mention I have 16 grandchildren?
